CrossFit 15-501 Newsletter

Hello again from CrossFit 15-501!!

It’s been a while since I’ve written a blog-entry so there are a number of items to get to:

Member Spotlight

Since we didn’t have an August “Member Spotlight”, we’ll be focusing on two for the month of September. Please see both Fiona Kapilovic and Preston MacIntyre’s story on Facebook and on the website. These are two outstanding members and we’re happy to have them both in our community at CrossFit 15-501.

Mustang Pride

Each Monday, Wednesday, and Friday if you stop by the gym from 3:45pm to 4:30pm you may see a group of kids running around learning the benefits of CrossFit. These boys are between the ages of 12-14 and began a program on September 7th to get in better shape in a supportive, team environment. So far they’re rapidly learning the Foundational Movements of CrossFit and are getting stronger, getting in better shape, and having a lot of fun. They’re a great group of kids that are a lot of fun to be around and watch. If you get the chance, stop in and welcome them to the CrossFit 15-501 community. A big thank you goes out to Fiona Kapilovic for initiating the program and recommending us to these great kids and their families.

WODBody Sports Massage

WODBody has changed the day that they will be providing their services at the gym. They will now be coming on Tuesdays instead of Thursdays. Their next scheduled date is September 20th from 3-7pm.

If you haven’t tried WODBody yet and you’re having any aches and pains then you should really give them a try. They have done wonders for some of our members by providing pain relief and increased mobility.

Public Service Announcements

Please remember to do the following:

Pick up after yourselves…chalk, tape, band-aids, weights, bands, etc. I don’t like picking up after everyone and I know that classes after yours don't like having to workout in and around the previous classes’ stuff. Simply scan the floor where you were/are before you leave and pick up anything you might have left behind or dropped…even if it’s not yours. Thank you!

Protect the bar…when stripping the weights off of a bar, please stand “inside” of the bar, place one hand on the barbell, and then slide the weights outward and away from you. Once the weight is off you can gently place the barbell on the floor. This will protect the bearings in the bar so it will continue to spin properly.

Returning the plates to the wall at the front…please be aware that there are two outlets and a pipe containing wires connecting the two outlets on the wall where the plates are found. Be careful not to throw the plates into the wall or on top of either the outlets or the pipe. The pipe itself is bracketed to the wall and two of the brackets have already been ripped off due to the dropping of weights on them. So please be careful how aggressively you put the weights back in the stack and try to avoid hitting the bar or outlets with the weights you return. Thank you again!

Jump Ropes

When we first opened on May 2nd, we started with 11 jump ropes. Our current count is 6. I know I have let a few of you take home a rope here and there to practice but we need to “store” the ropes back in the gym so others can use them for workouts. If you have one of the Rogue Jump Ropes, please return it so we can have them available and so we can take an inventory of what we have. If these are lost, I’ll order more. Thanks!!

Lost and Found

We are starting to accumulate “stuff”. We currently have a pair of flip-flops, some sort of phone cord, a pair of leopard sunglasses, a sock, a water bottle, and a small black umbrella. Please take a look at the items on the shelf below the microwave in the back of the gym to claim anything that might be yours. I don’t want to get rid of something that belongs to you so please take a look.

Upcoming Events

On Saturday, October 15th, CrossFit 15-501 will be competing in the Triangle Invitational at CrossFit RTP in Durham. This is a 6-person team event consisting of three males and three females competing against other teams from across the Triangle. If you’ve never been to a CrossFit competition, you should see one in person. It’s pretty amazing to see the performances by CrossFitters in action during a competition. In addition, it will be a great opportunity to cheer on people from your own CrossFit community. There will be food, drinks, fun, etc at the event so please join in! The members of the team include Anna Clendening, Britney Karschner, Caitlin Naugle Hunter Collins, Matt Holtry, and Oscar Cuahatle with Rachel Ozerkevich serving as an Alternate.

Shout Outs

Thank you to Coach Hunter Collins!!! Hunter really stepped up for us and covered classes over Labor Day and the weekend after. He is also coordinating the activities and practices for the CrossFit 15-501 Team competing in the Triangle Invitational. Thanks for doing what you do Hunter!!!

If you want additional training or have any friends looking to start CrossFit and want to begin in a more personal setting, Hunter is available for Personal Training. Signups are for 30 minutes or 1 hour sessions. Please visit the website or speak with me or Hunter directly about setting this up.

Congratulations to Lindsey Hoffer on her nuptials! Lindsey married Jesse Greenhill on August 31st in Hillsborough. Congratulations Mrs. Hoffer-Greenhill!!!

Anna Clendening’s album, “Unfiltered” makes it’s debut on September 27th. It’s been a long road of writing, singing, producing, traveling, making music videos, etc. for her and we’re all happy to know that it’s all culminated in such a great piece of work. You can follow Anna on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram to find out more about her music. Please reach out to her in the gym as well to show your support for such an amazing accomplishment. Best of luck Anna and give us a shout when you’re on stage accepting your award at the Grammy’s.

Congratulations to Amanda Culbertson who moved from Moncure to Chapel Hill and LOVES her new place!

I’d like to thank each and every one of you for being amazing individuals and contributing to our really awesome Community at CrossFit 15-501! I am a very fortunate guy to be able to coach you all and count you as friends.

One of the things I was hoping for in opening CF 15-501 was to foster a very open and welcoming environment for people to achieve their fitness goals. One the past few months, I’ve had so many new members and drop-ins tell me how supportive, friendly, and welcoming this community has been. It’s truly a testament to the quality of human beings that you are. I can’t thank you enough for not only being supportive of each other and any new folks but also of the gym and the community. It is truly a pleasure to come to work each day and see you all.

Keep up the great work in the gym! I look forward to seeing you all improve and hit the goals you have set for yourself this year! Thank you!!!
