Preston MacIntyre

Tell us a little about yourself.
I have a family of four with one son away at college. I am a meeting and event producer with my company based in Atlanta which requires extensive traveling. Fitness has always been a part of my life, with running being a lifelong pursuit. I have lifted on and off since middle school. Cycling fills my long endurance component. CrossFit has taken my fitness to a whole new level. In fact, I did not realize how much I was not getting out of my routine.

How did you get started in CrossFit?
I was a member at a large chapel hill gym and Lifetime Fitness in Atlanta, and Island Fitness in Merritt Island, FL. There was a notice up for a free class on Saturday after Christmas in 2014. I went in for what turned out to be a partner WOD. The WOD was a lot of fun and very challenging - and had a ton of Abmat sit-ups. The rest is history.

What is your proudest CrossFit moment?
That would be my second Murph. 44 minutes at CrossFit 15-501 which has hills. 2 minutes less than 2015 with no hills.

What is your favorite movement/lift? Least favorite?
My least favorite would have to be a Thruster, with Wall Balls coming in a close second. I like body weight, so some of the gymnastics movements are tops. Chest-to-bar Pullups, Handstand Pushups, and Deck Squat Box Jumps can be fun. The Snatch is my favorite lift.

What are your fitness/CrossFit goals for the rest of the year?
In broad terms, I want to get stronger, faster, and more fit continuously. Better each week, month and year. I would like to get a few competitions in this fall. The goals that I would like to achieve are many, but Butterfly Pullups, Ring Muscle Ups, and Double-Unders all are at the top of the list.

How has your experience at CrossFit 15-501 been?
There has been a great community at CrossFit 15-501 since day one. That is huge. Everyone is awesome there. The coaching is most important, though. Jim's experience as a Division I coach is evident every day in the way he is able to help with perfecting technical movements. He is good at helping you understand why the form is beneficial to the movement.

What has been the most rewarding part of your time at CrossFit 15-501?
All of it.

Have you had a favorite WOD so far at CrossFit 15-501?
Lumberjack 20.

What would you say to anyone thinking about trying CrossFit for the first time and trying CrossFit 15-501?
Be careful, my daughter says it is an addiction.

Tell us anything else you have on your mind.
Having dropped in on many different CrossFit gyms around the world, CrossFit15-501 is one of the best boxes with THE best coaching. CrossFit 15-501 has something for everyone, we have had the whole family there for a few workouts when everyone is in town at the same time. For now, it is my wife, 14-year-old daughter, and myself. With scaling and personalized training, we all get an appropriate, intense challenge.

Fiona Kapilovic

Tell us a little about yourself:
I grew up on a farm in Illinois, moved to the big city (Phoenix/Scottsdale) when I was 14, and have been moving around as a college football coach wife since I was 30! I have been married to my husband Chris for almost 23 years, and we have two awesome sons Carsen (13) and Colin (9). Carsen has been doing CrossFit with me for the past few months and loves it! I stay busy as a stay at home mom with lots of sports, etc. since my husband isn’t around much for most of the year ;) I try to keep my skills sharp and do my part for the community by volunteering.

How did you get started in CrossFit?
When we moved here another coach’s wife was doing it and was convinced I would love it and she was right! I started at a local CrossFit gym and LOVED it! I moved to CrossFit 15-501 because it was so much more convenient and saved me a lot of time. I miss my previous CrossFitters, but have loved being here and making new CrossFit friends!

What is your proudest CrossFit moment?
I haven’t always been able to do CrossFit as consistently as I would like. Getting back into the groove and crushing a few old PR’s recently made me so proud that I haven’t given up! I’m still working hard and making gains!

What is your favorite movement/lift? Least favorite?
For reasons I cannot explain, I love the Split Jerk and the Deadlift. I really intensely dislike the Snatch, and of course running. I strongly feel that one should only run if being chased by a madman with a knife. Of course, if ever I am chased by a madman with a knife I will surely die because I am so slow ;)

Have you had a favorite WOD so far at CrossFit 15-501?
I like WOD’s that contain lifting and rowing. No running is always a good day for me!

What are your fitness/CrossFit goals for the rest of the year?

BE CONSISTENT! And maybe add a new skill to my repertoire; learning to really kip properly would be great!

How has your experience at CrossFit 15-501 been?
Awesome, amazing, inspiring, fun, rewarding.

What has been the most rewarding part of your time at CrossFit 15-501?
I was so worried leaving my old box that I wouldn’t like my coaches or fellow athletes as much, but that hasn’t been the case at all. I am still being challenged and properly trained and supported and can’t wait to get back to another workout!

What would you say to anyone thinking about trying CrossFit for the first time and trying CrossFit 15-501?
If you have the interest, you should try it because you can do it. I don’t care what kind of shape you are in, our community can help you get to where you want to be. You will be surprised at what you are capable of and how proud you can be of yourself and your fellow athletes.

Joy Krawczel

Tell us a little about yourself:

I grew up in Richmond, VA and after moving around the state from Charlottesville to Williamsburg to Roanoke, we find ourselves in a new state, but still a college town - Chapel Hill. My husband Joe and I have 3 daughters ages 7, 5, and 2. I'm a licensed K-8 teacher, but I currently stay home with our kiddos. We love the outdoors - hiking, kayaking, and going on bike rides. We also enjoy traveling and hanging out with friends and family.

How did you get started in CrossFit?

When we lived in Roanoke, VA, I read an article about a local Crossfit box and decided to give it a try. I was motivated by fitting into a bridesmaids dress for an upcoming wedding. I was shocked at how my body composition changed in my first three weeks of CF.

What is your proudest CrossFit moment?

I have a few proud moments - the first was continuing to Crossfit up until 2 days before our 3rd daughter was born. Each time I walked in those last few weeks my coach went pale. ;) Also, a year after delivering said baby, I participated in a 3-week nutrition challenge - box members voted on the most significant body change (from our before and after photos) and I won!  My body changed so dramatically - I was very proud of how fit I was. Lastly, I was super excited the first time I finally got a double under. That was a great accomplishment.

What is your favorite movement/lift?  Least favorite?

I was made to squat - any squat. I was not made to press, but it's improving.

Have you had a favorite WOD so far at CrossFit 15-501?

Anything with kettlebell swings is my favorite.

What are your fitness/CrossFit goals for the rest of the year?

I'm excited to continue to build on my skills and get stronger. One main goal is to strengthen my core and to be consistent with my nutrition.

How has your experience at CrossFit 15-501 been?

This box is so amazing! I can't say enough good things about Jim's coaching, the programming, and the people!

What has been the most rewarding part of your time at CrossFit 15-501?

I am getting stronger every day. The encouragement of my 6am crew and Coach Jim is incredibly motivating. I don't like missing class ever.

What would you say to anyone thinking about trying CrossFit for the first time and trying CrossFit 15-501?

Go for it! You will love how you feel after the WOD - love is not the word for how you feel during, but it's an amazing accomplishment getting in there and getting it done. I look forward to seeing you in the box!

Anna Clendening

Tell us a little about yourself:

My name is Anna Clendening. I am 23 years old and from Chapel Hill. I am a proud mother of 5 (each one with four legs and tons of fur). I am a singer, songwriter, and I love to workout.

How did you get started in CrossFit?

I started CrossFit after working with Coach Hunter as a personal trainer for six months. He used CrossFit-inspired movements which really challenged me. After my contract was up with him,I decided to enroll in CrossFit.

What is your proudest CrossFit moment?

My proudest CrossFit moment would have to be finishing MURPH in under an hour (or basically finishing it at all). I set out to finish it in under 2 hours and I destroyed my goal!

What is your favorite movement/lift? Least favorite?

Favorite movement would definitely have to be a power clean, and my least favorite would be a snatch.

Have you had a favorite WOD so far at CrossFit 15-501?

I love every WOD as silly as that sounds. Every day is a different and new way to better myself.

What are your fitness/CrossFit goals for the rest of the year?

I want to improve my strength, my form, and most of all my attitude.

How has your experience at CrossFit 15-501 been?

My experience at CrossFit 15-501 has been amazing. Every coach and every member are dedicated to learning, growing, and being a family basically. I have grown leaps and bounds within just a few weeks already.

What has been the most rewarding part of your time at CrossFit 15-501?

The most rewarding part of being at CrossFit 15-501 has been the community. I have come to know and love the people I work out with. It’s already an amazing feeling to kill a workout or gain a PR, but to do it next to people that love and cheer you on? That’s even better.

What would you say to anyone thinking about trying CrossFit for the first time and trying CrossFit 15-501?

I would say “ DO IT, DO IT, DO IT!” It’s not just about slamming heavy weights around and going crazy every workout. It’s a chance to challenge yourself physically and mentally while making yourself a better person.
